MEDIATOR:
POWERSTATION OF ART / SHANGHAI
This work was specially developed on site for the exhibition space at the Powerstation of Art in Shanghai and is based on the same construction principle as in the Künstlerhaus Wien: cords hang from the ceiling and are tensioned downwards with a weight. The difference here is that the paving stones were replaced by portable audio speakers with built-in batteries. The distances between the positions are smaller, and the space between the “instruments” is open. This allows interaction partners to see each other and form an interaction group.
In Shanghai, mobile karaoke speakers – portable Bluetooth boxes with microphones – are a familiar sight in the urban landscape. They are an integral part of urban culture and are used for singing, dancing, or yoga. This element, so familiar to the public, was transferred into an artistic context – a deliberate modification that opened something familiar, simultaneously alienated it, and in doing so, created surprise and curiosity.
The integration of this everyday object led to immediate associations: karaoke, singing, spontaneous performance. The audience responded with interaction, group dynamics, and performative gestures – the familiar became a trigger for new perceptions and actions. Interactions occurred on both an acoustic and a visual level.

Diese Arbeit wurde speziell vor Ort für den Ausstellungsraum der Powerstation of Art in Shanghai entwickelt und basiert auf demselben Bauprinzip wie im Künstlerhaus Wien: Schnüre hängen von der Decke und werden mit einem Gewicht nach unten gespannt. Der Unterschied hier: Die Pflastersteine wurden durch tragbare Audiolautsprecher mit integriertem Akku ersetzt. Die Abstände zwischen den Positionen sind kleiner, der Raum zwischen den „Instrumenten“ ist frei. So können sich Interaktionspartner*innen sehen und zu einer Gruppe formieren.
In Shanghai sind mobile Karaoke-Lautsprecher – tragbare Bluetooth-Boxen mit Mikrofon – ein vertrauter Anblick im Straßenbild. Sie sind fester Bestandteil der urbanen Kultur und werden zum Singen, Tanzen oder Yoga genutzt. Dieses dem Publikum sehr vertraute Element wurde in einen künstlerischen Kontext übertragen – eine bewusste Modifikation, die etwas Vertrautes öffnete, es zugleich verfremdete und so Überraschung und Neugier erzeugte.
Die Einbindung dieses Alltagsobjekts führte zu unmittelbaren Assoziationen: Karaoke, Gesang, spontane Performance. Das Publikum reagierte mit Interaktion, Gruppendynamik und performativen Gesten – das Bekannte wurde zum Auslöser neuer Wahrnehmungen und Handlungen. Es entstanden Interaktionen sowohl auf akustischer als auch auf visueller Ebene.
